Eat Chocolate – Guilt Free!

It’s official – scientists have even confirmed it, chocolate really does make you feel good!

Cocoa contains caffeine and phenylethylamine, a type of amphetamine that is known to have a stimulant-type effect on the brain.

Researchers at the Neurosciences Institute in San Diego, California, have come up with a more controversial finding, which might explain further why we reach for chocolate treats when we need a mood lift. Apparently chocolate contains pharmacologically active substances called THC (Tetra- Hydrocannabinol) which relax the brain in a similar way to cannabis.

Other studies have found that the combination of caffeine, theobromine and phenylethylamine in cocoa – all of which are stimulants – give us that special lift associated with chocolate.

There are several scientific claims that chocolate, eaten in moderation, can lower blood pressure and have cardio-protective properties. Dark chocolate – with higher cocoa content - is often promoted for its health benefits - including a substantial amount of antioxidants that reduce the formation of free radicals.

While I’m sure you don’t need telling twice about the benefits of chocolate (I certainly don’t) – it’s also worth noting that sadly chocolate is also often rich in saturated fats and high in calories, so best eaten in moderation.
