Our new range of mug gifts is now online!
Be it tea, coffee, hot chocolate or even soup, a hot drink is a relaxing ritual. Most of us don’t just have a favourite hot drink (black tea, no sugar for me), we also have preferences for certain sizes, shapes and designs of mug. I find tea always seems to taste better in my favourite mug.
We can be attached to mugs that we received as gifts as a reminder of the occasion and the person who gave it us. If you’re stuck for gift ideas for a friend or relative who seems to have everything a mug is small practical gift that will always be well received. They are ideal for:
- Birthdays – don’t let milestone birthdays slip by without a “big birthday” mug, they won’t be able to hide their age!
- Get well – a comforting warm drink will hopefully set them on the road to recovery
- Mother’s Day and Father’s Day
- Christmas – perfect small gifts and stocking fillers to show friends and relatives how special they are, funny mugs are also popular secret Santa gifts
Our Mugs brands
Our Name is Mud
These funny mugs are designed by Laurie Wesley and characterised by bold colours and witty captions. Equal attention is given the functionality of a piece and its design. Laurie says “I make objects that are to be used and enjoyed on a daily basis. I would rather be in someone’s kitchen cabinet than in a glass case. When I design my pottery, I am always aware that the piece may become woven into the everyday fabric of a person’s life, or given for an important occasion. It has to be special, unusual, quirky and feel like it is just PERFECT for yourself or someone you know”.

Mug or cup? What’s the difference
A mug is a sturdier type of cup. Mugs often have handles and hold a larger amount of fluid than other types of cup. Mugs are not usually used in formal settings, where tea cups or coffee cups are preferred.
Short history of the mug
The first pottery mugs were carved in wood or bone or shaped with clay by hand and later made with a potter’s wheel. Mugs have been found on early settlements as far back as 4000–5000 BC. Although not ideal to use with hot drinks metal mugs were found from 2000 BC. Porcelain was invented around 600 AC in China. It allowed us to make mugs suitable both for cold and hot drinks, which we still enjoy today!
Most modern mugs are made of ceramic materials such as earthenware, bone china, porcelain or stoneware. Some are made from strengthened glass (Pyrex) plastic. Steel and enamelled metal mugs are popular with campers.
