The History of Father’s Day

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the first Father’s Day celebration. According to our research, Father’s Day was established in Spokane, USA by Sonora Louise Smart Dodd. Aged only 16 when her mother died in childbirth, Sonora and her siblings were brought up by their father, a Civil War veteran.

The story goes that while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909, Sonora had the inspiration to establish a day to honour fathers. Thanks to her tireless campaigning, the first Father’s Day was celebrated the following year in Spokane on Sunday, 19 June 1910. Eventually Sonora’s campaign led to Father’s Day receiving official recognition.

Father’s Day worldwide

Today, Father’s Day is still celebrated on the third Sunday in June in over 50 countries worldwide, including the UK and USA. This year, Father’s Day falls on 20 June, 100 years and 1 day exactly since Sonora held the first Father’s Day celebration.

Other countries also celebrate Father’s Day but on different days in the year. For example, in Australia and New Zealand, Father’s Day is celebrated on the first Sunday in September, and in Scandinavia on the second Sunday in November.

Throughout the world, children traditionally celebrate this special day by giving cards and Father’s Day gifts to their ‘Dad’, in other words the man who is most influential in their lives – be it their natural father, step-father, or grandfather.

Gift ideas for Father’s Day

Father’s Day is a chance for children to spoil their Dad and show them how much they are loved and thought of. While expensive gifts are always welcome, often it’s the little things that mean the most to a Dad on Father’s Day.

Starting the day off right by treating Dad to breakfast in bed can be followed up by giving Dad control of the TV remote control for the day. Taking over those summer Sunday chores, like cutting the grass, can also be a welcome gift.

Yet, many children will also buy or make a card and Father’s Day gift for their Dad. Traditional gifts like ties, socks and chocolates are always high on the list, but more personal presents that show how much thought has gone into the gift are often most valued. Perhaps a book by his favourite author, a CD by his favourite group, or even tickets to a favourite sporting or music event, if budgets allow, will make him smile.

For younger children, keepsake Dad Teddy Bears, home-made cards, pictures or stories drawn and written by their children can make delightful Father’s Day gifts. Similarly, framed photos of their children are also excellent ideas.

While it’s easier for adults to simply spend money on their Dad, time can be a wonderful gift on Father’s Day. Taking Dad out for a meal or cooking him a homemade meal is a great way to spend more time with Dad on Father’s Day. It also returns to the root of why this day was first established – to appreciate all the things that our fathers do for us throughout our lives.

8 Top Tips to Make Father’s Day Special and Involve The Kids Too

Dads don’t always get the attention they deserve when it comes to Father’s Day. Father’s Day doesn’t quite get the same coverage as Mother’s Day but you can still make Dad feel special and get the kids involved too.

Forget novelty socks – it’s time to get the kids to use their imagination to create something a little more unique and spoil Dad without breaking the bank.

Allow him to enjoy a long, uninterrupted lie-in (it might be harder with small children as they will be excited)
Bring him his favourite breakfast in bed – the children can help prepare him a breakfast made with love. Remember to bring Dad the morning papers too
Wash his car – maybe while he enjoys a peaceful breakfast
Make your own card and write all the things you like about Dad (or what you like to do with him) and add plenty of drawings. Older children could write a poem.
Make your own “The Best Dad in the World” certificate. You could even frame it and add a picture of the kids
Agree to be on best behaviour – spend the whole day without arguing or fighting, be quiet when asked etc…
Do something together as a family – picnic, walk, visit the park or anything you like to do as a family
Ask Dad what he would like to do – after all it’s his special day!

Do dads really deserve Father’s Day? After all, don’t they just embarrass us by telling our friends how we used to run around the garden in a pair of red wellies and nothing else, or taking over the dance floor at family parties with their cringeworthy ‘dad dance’?

But then again, dads are good as a free taxi service, good at fixing things and always ready to offer sound advice – even if you don’t always want to hear it. So perhaps on balance, one day a year isn’t too bad to say thanks for putting up with us kids (whatever our age).

Yet, children all over the country struggle with the same old problem – what on Earth do you buy your dad for Father’s Day. Well, to help you out, I have put my thinking cap on and came up with some Father’s Day gift ideas to suit all budgets. So forget the socks and ties this year and instead, treat your dad to something really special.

High budget: £50 +

If money is no object then it’s easy to come up with something nice for your dad. But instead of just buying him the latest designer outfit, why not put some thought and personality into your gift as well?

If you go for something like diamond studded cufflinks or watch, personalise them with an engraved message. For something memorable, how about an experience gift; you could send your dad hot air ballooning; give him a flying lesson or a VIP ticket to his favourite sporting or musical event. You could even send him off on a mini-break weekend to somewhere he’s always wanted to go.

Medium budget: £5 – £50

A bottle of champagne or his favourite wine is usually a welcome gift. Alternatively, a book by his favourite author or one on his favourite subject, whether it’s football or pigeon racing that interests him, will let your dad know that you’ve put some thought into his gift.

And remember, if your dad lives away, you could always surprise him with one of Big Fat Balloon’s Father’s Day balloons (example picture here). Why not make it an even greater surprise and send chocolates and/or send a teddy bear with your balloon?

Zero budget:

If cash is tight, why not spend some time on your dad instead? Make him a card, take him breakfast in bed along with the morning paper and make sure that Father’s Day is completely relaxing for him.

You could even give him a promissory voucher that you will clean the car or cut the lawn or do the dishes for him for two weeks. Or if you have an artistic side, draw him a picture, write a poem or create a story just for him. You might be surprised; the thought that goes into this type of gift will probably have far more value for your dad.

Any budget:

How about creating your own ‘Dad’s gift basket’? Buy him a sports bag or a holdall and fill it with all your dad’s favourite things; toiletries, chocolates, CDs, whatever you feel like including. This way you can spend as much or as little as you like.

Whatever you get for your dad this Father’s Day, don’t forget to tell him how much he means to you – after all that doesn’t cost a penny!
